The Syfy Channel has a handful of first run series, the best of which at the moment is Eureka. This is the story of a small town of super geniuses who didn’t want to live in Area 51 and the poor sap who ends up being the town’s Sheriff. The punchline of almost every episode of Eureka is that the idiot Sheriff is the only one to see the obvious solution to whatever earth ending problem the super geniuses have created that week. The new season opens up with a collection of Previously on Eureka clips, the most interesting…

Red Dwarf: Return to Earth
Red Dwarf has been resurrected by digital channel Dave for a two-part Easter weekend special, which sees the Crew finally return to Earth. Written by Red Dwarf creator Doug Nylor, Red Dwarf:Return to Earth reunited the four main characters. Red Dwarf is a BBC2 sci fi comedy show, widely broadcast in America on PBS. In it’s eight searies from 1988 to 1999 there were a lot of changes in the always bizarre plot and characters of Red Dwarf. Holly the computer was a man’s floating head, then a woman’s floating head, them missing completely for long periods. The four mainstays…
Shatner’s Raw Nerve
William Shatner likes to keep busy. When he’s not trying to get people to use Priceline.com – no one deals like we do! Or preforming as Denny Crane in the long running Boston Legal. Or writing one of a zillion books. Or appearing at a Star Trek Convention. William Shatner does a pretty job as an interviewer on the Biography Channel. The list of people that have agreed to go on Shatner’s Raw Nerve includes such people as Valerie Bertinelli, Tim Allen, Jenna Jamison, Jimmy Kimmel, and Leonard Nimoy. To be honest I have only seen the Leonard Nimoy episode,…
Stargate Atlantis Ends
And Stargate Universe is set to take off. But before the new Stargate Universe gets under way, we have to let the old team save the Earth-yawn-one more time. In the last episode of Stargate Atlantis our heroes meet up with good old Wraith Todd, who tells them of a new threat and also that he has a couple of spare ZPMs laying around. In fact, he was just kicked off a suped up Hive Ship powered by a Zed P M. The End of The World is Close at Hand. There are a few tense moments-and for just a…
The Day The Earth Stood Still
Spoilers within. There’s only one of two things you need from a movie critic-one that you always agree with, or one that you never agree with. Gary Cogill is a small time movie critic in Dallas. He has a long bio and list of accomplishments-and I have not trusted his advice on films since he recommended The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover. That film is right up there with Peter Jackson’s King Kong when it comes to all time worst movies. Which brings me to The Day The Earth Stood Still starring Keanu Reeves. NOT The Worst…
Sarah Connor Chronicles-Time Travel Happy
Kyle Reese: The 600 series had rubber skin. We spotted them easy, but these are new. They look human… sweat, bad breath, everything. Very hard to spot. I had to wait till he moved on you before I could zero on him.Sarah Connor: Look… I am not stupid, you know. They cannot make things like that yet. Kyle Reese:Not yet. Not for about 40 years.-The Ternimator That was 1984 and while technology has made a few impressive strides, we don’t seem to be in the realm of humanoid robots or phased-plasma rifles just yet. Sci Fi seldom gets future events…
Sanctuary on The Sci Fi Channel
Sanctuary is an odd show, even for the Sci Fi Channel. We have a Harry Potter look alike, who does not have an English accent and Samantha Carter from Stargate, who does have an English accent. Also from Stargate-the Atlantis brand-is a Caveman/Bigfoot/Who Knows What He Is who speaks with the exact same voice he uses when he plays Todd the Wraith. I keep expecting him to make some joke about Gieco. Sanctuary is one of those new style shows where they don’t bother with things like sets-its all shot on a green screen and the massive buildings and mountain…
Thirteen by Richard K. Morgan
In the future, after another world war or two and after the United States have split into several parts-Genetic Variates are as common as different dog breeds. There are women who are genetically engineered to be great lovers, men who are engineered to do a lot of thinking, and men who are engineered to do a lot of killing. Our hero, such as he is, is a Variant 13-a Superman who is a recreated Human from twenty thousand years ago. Th1rte3n is a long and surprisingly deep book. The idea that bad things happen when you genetically engineer people is…
Blindness-Feel Around for Some Logic
Spoilers within. Blindness is a movie about what happens when people start to go blind for no reason. Think Lord of The Flies meets 28 Days Later-only not quite as interesting as either one. I liked Blindness, but it is a standard issue sci fi premise that something happens-we never find out why-and we then watch as society falls instantly into shambles. I was never sure where the story of Blindness was set-at first I thought it was in Hong Kong or some other large city. It seems to set in America, with a large and impressive bridge half completed…
TR2N-Tron 2
During a Disney panel that was ostensibly set up to promote “Race to Witch Mountain,” the studio waited until the very end to reveal their new version of “Tron.” And the new film has an official title, “Tr2n.” Yes, it is officially a sequel.-MTV Tron was a wonderfully odd film-one of those rare moments when Disney stepped away from traditional cartoons and Escape To Witch Mountain (Disney isn’t really making a new Witch Mountain, are they?) to take on something a bit more serious. If you consider being sucked into a computer and being forced to play video games serious.…
