In space no one can hear you say Wait? What?
Space travel is often depicted in one of two ways. Everything is clean and perfect or everything is gritty and dirty. Origin goes for the Star Trek model of everything in its place. Which is a bit odd since it is filled with murder and mayhem like Alien.
Origin helps itself to bits and pieces of lots of SciFi plots from the past fifty years or so. A handful of people trapped on a ship they can’t control. Inscrutable aliens being inscrutable. Endless flashbacks giving each character a history, but still managing to never explain how this group of thoroughly rotten people were shipped off to another world. And just a lot of stuff that makes no sense.
Spoilers.
We start off with a group of Sleepers waking up on a spaceship. Something has struck the ship. They assume this was a mishap, but was it? The object looks like a meteor, at least what little we see of it. But it has passengers. Aliens who want to…what do the Aliens want again? Just the first of countless questions raised and never answered.
A scientist repeatedly states that the Aliens are parasites that can’t live outside a host body. Ok. Then how did they travel to the ship in the first place? How do they live on their home world? Why do they initially kill the humans they take over?
Once the survivors know there is an Alien parasite on the ship, why do they spend any time alone? Why do they constantly invite disaster and act surprised when things go wrong?
The acting was fine. The sets looked good. Did I mention the story made no damned sense at all?
