True Blood is based on the Southern Vampire Novels about Bill the Vampire and Sookie Stackhouse the Mind Reader, this HBO show has all the sex and violence you could want. Sookie’s brother is a horndog who seems to be the kiss of death, as two women he has sex with end up dead the next day. We get a lot of shots of people having sex in True Blood, most of them showing near perfect body builder forms without an ounce of body fat to spare.
But True Blood isn’t just about sex, it’s about blood as well. True Blood is the name of a Japanese Synthetic Blood that has allowed Vampires to move into the Main Stream. Without the need to kill people to get blood, they are now ready to take up their place as regular members of society. Needless to say not everyone in the quaint Southern Town where Sookie lives is happy about True Blood being on the menu. But some people are, as Vampire Blood is now an illegal drug and there are plenty of people willing to be fed on by a Vampire.
Sookie, of course, is no normal human. She is a Mind Reader and she finds the company of Bill the Civil War Era Vampire who has moved in down the road a relief to be around. She can’t read Vampires, so she enjoys the peace and quiet of not having to hear his thoughts. Bill is also fascinated by her, though it is not exactly clear why this is so.
The cast is a wonderful mixed bag of all the odds and ends you would expect to find in a small southern town. That is to say, all the people you would expect in a stereotypical small southern town. White bigots, black queens, black people who think the world owes them something, red neck Sheriff’s and backwoods hill billy types. The only accent that really bothers me is the black girl who has the hots for Sookie’s dimwit brother. She doesn’t quite sound as bad as Scarlett O’Hara, but she does sound pretty bad. Sookies Mom has a nice southern accent that sounds a lot more authentic than most in the show.
But it’s the Vampires and the Sex that are the real stars of True Blood.
I love the theme from True Blood, a kind of twangy guitar and a southern twang in the singer’s voice. There is also a bit of a joke at the end of each episode as the closing song relates to recent events. This is a fun show, but it is not for everyone. Random sex, random violence, and the general feeling of you can’t tell the players without a score card. But it is only a few episodes old, so maybe it will make more sense as it goes along. Or maybe not.
The Tru Blood beverage site is also a nice touch, complete with a silly commercial-Tru Blood-Suck it Up.
