Three Anchors and Cancer

On Friday evening, September 5, 2008, the networks will donate one hour of primetime for a history-making interactive television special, uniting the nation as we Stand Up To Cancer.

Stand Up To Cancer wants to raise money for cancer research-it seems cancer isn’t getting the press that it used to. So the Big Three Anchors- Katie Couric, Brain Williams, and Charles Gibson have joined forces to spread the word. I caught them on The Today Show and Good Morning America.

ABC’s Good Morning America featured Robin Roberts, who is a cancer survivor, doing the interview with the three anchors. It was all cancer talk, and Katie Couric and Robin Roberts got a little technical in the details for Brain Williams and Charles Gibson to keep up.

On NBC’s Today Show Matt-I’m a serious journalist-Lauer had to commandeer the discussion about Cancer and ask the Big Three why they hadn’t asked ‘the tough questions’ before the start of The War. If you tuned in late, as I did, you might not have known they were promoting a website to fund cancer research. I thought maybe the three had gotten together to write a book about how evil the Bush Administration has been.

Matt Lauer hogging the spotlight aside, it was interesting to see the Big Three Anchors in once place-two of them former Morning Show hosts themselves. I was never a big fan of making Katie Couric a news anchor, as she seemed perfect in the role of bubbly morning airhead. But then, being a news anchor isn’t what it used to be. To be perfectly honest I didn’t know who the NBC anchor was, nor do I recall who held the seat before Brian Williams took over.

I get most of my news from Google and only watch local news on TV. I watch most of the morning shows, or at least have them on in the background.

One of the interesting features on the Stand Up To Cancer site is the The Constellation Page, where you can make a donation and add a star. There is also a page called The Stand which features a wall of images. The website has a lot of info and a lot of videos.
