The Iron Lady

Meryl Streep won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher.  I think she did a very good job, but her makeup artists where the real stars of this show-they also won an Oscar.  We shift from the past to the present and  the actors playing the principals all undergo some dramatic changes.  At one point I mistook another Minister for Margret’s husband, who has a co-starring role as a ghost/hallucination.   You’ve seen one old British guy with huge glasses and you’ve seen then all. Not being an expert on Margaret Thatcher, I had to google her to find…

Hector and the Search for Happiness

Lesson No. 1:  Making comparisons can spoil your happiness. Once upon a time there was a young psychiatrist called Hector who was not very satisfied with himself. Hector is a man on a mission.  He wants to find out what makes people happy so that he can help his patients become happy, too.  He is baffled that so many of the people he sees are not happy, even when they have nothing wrong with them and life should be good. Hector and the Search for Happiness is written in a simple and straightforward style. Not quite Dick and Jane, but…

52 Loaves by William Alexander

The story of one man’s obsession to bake the perfect loaf of bread.  Our hero ate a bit of bread at a fancy New York restaurant and was transported by it.  He asked what it was called, and the waiter told him it was Peasant Bread.  He then decided to bake his own Peasant Bread.  The logical thing, call up the restaurant and ask if you can have their recipe, or Google peasant bread and see what kinds of recipes pop up, take a back seat to irrational exuberance. Over the course of 52 weeks, William Alexander decided to bake…

Google’s Art Project

Dear old Mom wanted to be an Artist when she grew up.  She took one of those mail order courses where you draw a turtle and bought a lot of books containing the Works of The Masters.  She sketched three things a day, and yet, she never got past that kind of middle school phase where her work looked ok, but never looked exactly like Art.  I went through a small Artist phase myself, sketching and drawing and never becoming any better. The Wife went to college and studied Art.  She painted mostly abstracts on 3×4 foot canvases, with an…

That Was The Year That Was

This was the year that my blog got hacked and I got a bit discouraged about the whole thing.  I went from around 3,500 visitors in February to a low of about 10 visitors in April.  I have since leveled out at about 1,500 visitors a month.  I have found myself less interested in a number of things, and am blogging a bit less as a result. Most of my random visitors are looking for pictures.  My most popular Google image search terms are related to Burger King, Mountain Dew Throwback, and House on Vicodin.  My most popular posts are one about Team Name…

Adwords, Amazon Associates, and Affiliate Marketing

One of the good old fashioned ways to make money online is to sell other people’s stuff and be paid a small commission for each sale.  This is called Affiliate Marketing and it seems that just about everyone with an online presence has some kind affiliate program in place.  Over the years I have made a bit of pocket change being an affiliate for Amazon.com, The London Pass, and one or two other odds and ends here and there.  I have read a few ebooks, watched a few videos, and had a bit of fun trying to make some money.…
