Created by the American Pie Council, National Pie Day is dedicated to the celebration of pie.
Is it me, or does this sound like a group that should be represented on A Prairie Home Companion? The American Pie Council should be right up there with the Catsup Advisory Board. I’m sure that the Chatterbox Cafe has all kinds of pies in one of those giant refrigerated carousels they love so much up north.
My mom liked to make pies, and though she was not the best baker in the world, we loved Mom’s Pecan Pies. There is something about a pie made with pure corn syrup and pecans, wonderful stuff. Mom also made meringue pies and the occasional fruit pie, but they were not as good as the Pecan Pies. So I might have to look for a Pecan Pie to celebrate national pie day.
National Pie Day-begs the question, what is your favorite pie?
Fruit of The Forest Pie-There was a little restaurant near Shipshewana, IN that served a fruit of the forest pie that was a little slice of heaven here on earth. This was a very thick pie that was almost solid fruit with just enough sugar to hold it all together. I remember rhubarb, black berries, strawberries, and maybe blueberries. I have never had a pie exactly like it since, though the one from Marie Callenders is pretty good as well.
Peanut Butter Pie-This is a good old fashioned pie that is smooth and creamy. There are many variations of the peanut butter pies, some have all kinds of toppings piled on and some are just a simple filing in a shell. I like the simple kinds best.
Apple Pies- This is an an all America kind of pie, just smell of a good apple pie is enough to bring a smile to the face. My sister lives in the Great Inland Empire in Southern California, and we used to visit an apple orchard when we would visit her. They have the most amazing apple pies in Yucaipa. An apple pie about seven inches tall, dense and sweet and delicious. I don’t remember which of the many apple farms had these pies, but they were the best apples pies I ever tasted.
Key Lime Pie-Sweet and tart with a nice crumbly crust. I really like key lime pies.
I have never been a fan of Pumpkin Pies or Mincemeat Pies, but they are the only pies I don’t like. Pies, they are a good thing.
Happy Pie Day.
