Mr Robot

MV5BMTg3OTQ2NzAzN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMDUyNjY3NTE@._V1_SX214_AL_ The story of an insane man who happens to be a world class computer genius.

He hacks in his spare time and works as a cubicle drone during the day. One day a mysterious man approaches him and talks to him. I know how you feel. You think something is wrong with the world. You are The One…oh, wait, that was The Matrix.

I have to wonder if the producers thought, just for a moment or two, about getting Laurence Fishburne to play the part that Christian Slater plays. The cast could certainly use a little color and it would be a great running gag to have Morpheus do some real world hacking. But since that isn’t what happened, we’ll have to settle for Christian Slater, who has been in several very interesting TV shows that were all basically DOA.

I was really loving our wild eyed, delusional, goth girl banging hero, but then something totally horrible and unexpected happened. We find out that his favorite movie is Back to The Future II—NOOOOOoooooo!!!!!!! Well, it might have been a bit over the top if they’d had the balls to make The Matrix his favorite film, but it would have added a nice touch of, is any of this really happening? to the story.

I really liked Mr Robot with it’s first person rants and hatred of Corporations and love of hoodies and dark alleys. This is a great looking show. The technobabble sounds good, the fact that our hero works for a security company makes it easy for him to do his hacks, and I like the whole working out of an old video arcade thing. The games were even working and had that old familiar sound track of random games playing electronic music.

The first episode was great, even though some of Christian Slaters lines were almost verbatim what Morpheus says to Neo. They were so close I was expecting there to be a gag about The Matrix after he recites them, but there was no nudge nudge wink wink, see what we did there. Still, I liked this episode a lot.

Update:

Mr Robot turned out to be a lot more murdery that I had expected. Less about hacking and revolution and more about a number of crazy people. The madness of the hero is just the tip of the iceberg. I still like Mr Robot, but it veered off in a direction I didn’t like.
