For me the death of John Lennon was one of the frozen moments like 9/11. I was still a kid sharing a room with my little brother. He was listening to the radio and told me that John Lennon was dead. Only recently becoming an obsessed fan of the Beatles, and not yet that much of a fan of it’s componets, I was still greatly saddened by this news.
To the die hard Beatles, there was always the chance that they would get back together. John said in an interview that when Lorne Michaels offered The Beatles $3000 to appear on Saturday Night Live that they almost did it. Then who knows what might have happened. Maybe those two colossal egos could have gotten along once in a while to record some new music. Still, I guess it’s best that the Beatles died when they did.
I recently watched the BBC movie Lennon Nakedstaring former Doctor Who Christopher Exccleston, who did an ok job playing a slightly mad and totally pissed off John Lennon. There are some people who never escape their own creations. I’ve known people who like to refer everything John, Paul, George, and Ringo have ever done as Beatles music-even now, 30 years after John Lennon was killed, and 40 years since the Beatles were put to rest.
John Lennon was more than just one of the Beatles, and that is a great part of the tragedy of his death. Maybe he was finally gonna et off the couch and make more music. But now we’ll never know. Maybe Double Fantasy would have been his swan song and he would have spent the rest of his life hanging out with Sean and Yoko. After all, it’s not like Paul and Ringo have done a lot the past few years. George did have a bit of fun with that whole The Traveling Wilburys thing, but that got old pretty quick as well.
John Lennon seems to have been a pretty grumpy fellow, a man who had everything anyone could ask for, but it was never quite enough. I still listen to his music, I still love the Beatles, and liked those two new songs they whipped up out of John Lennon left overs. Real Love is one of my favorite Beatles songs now. Nobody Told Me is my favorite John Lennon song.
Everybody’s talking and no one says a word
Everybody’s making love and no one really cares
There’s nazis in the bathroom just below the stairs.
Always something happening and nothing going on
There’s always something happening cooking and nothing in the pot
They’re starving back in China so finish what you got.
They’re starving back in China so finish what you got.
Nobody told me there’d be days like these
Nobody told me there’d be days like these
Nobody told me there’d be days like these
Strange days indeed
strange days indeed.
Everybody’s runnin’ and no one makes a move
Everyone’s a winner
and no one seems to lose.
There’s a little yellow idol to the north of Katmandu.
Everybody’s flying and no one leaves the ground
Everybody’s crying and no one makes a sound.
There’s a place for us in movies you just gotta stay around.
Nobody told me there’d be days like these
Nobody told me there’d be days like these
Nobody told me there’d be days like these
Strange days indeed
most peculiar
Mama.
Everybody’s smoking and no one’s getting high
Everybody’s flying and never touch the sky
There’s Ufo’s over New York and I ain’t too surprised.
Nobody told me there’d be days like these
Nobody told me there’d be days like these
Nobody told me there’d be days like these
Strange days indeed
most peculiar. Mama.
