debt consolidation thoughts

I got my first credit card from Sear right after I got married. We needed an air conditioner and we got one on credit for 650 dollars. No need for a debt consolidation loan calculator yet. It took us right around five years to pay back that 650 dollars with enough interest to pay for two or three more. In the years that have followed I have gotten more credit cards, gone through periods of harassing calls and threatening letters and back to the phase where everyone and there dog wants me to get one of their little plastic wonders. I now get applications for debt consolidation credit cards, which is kind of funny if you think about it.
The wife went to college, but she doesn’t need student loan consolidation, as she never had any student loans that added up to much. I didn’t go to college so I don’t need any student debt consolidation, either. I used to watch Oprah, back when she had a talk show and not a soapbox, and she would have people that really needed debt consolidation home equity loans and they would then whip out the debt consolidation loan calculator and ponder what their lives would be like after debt consolidation. These people had debt in the neighborhood of half a million dollars or something. The stories always pissed me off, as the main one I remember, the debt counselor advised them to sell their Summer Home and put off the trip to Europe this year. Summer Home? I was missing meals when I was getting calls from debt collectors. I’m still in debt, but now it just doesn’t bother me as much as it once did. Being able to pay my bills may have something to do with that.
Of course, not everyone had summer homes to sell, but we still didn’t feel too sorry for them. Everyone watching knew what life would be like after Care One Debt Consolidation, they would free up all their credit cards and go on a spending spree. Debt consolidation home equity loans just enable some people to get into even more debt, while adding the benefit of putting your home at risk.
But I guess there are some success stories out there, not everyone that has a student debt consolidation goes back to school and gets another loan. But once you do get those loans, it’s so much fun to go shopping, isn’t it?
