“I am looking forward to seeing Brett Favre in a New York Jets uniform,” -Jets chairman and CEO Woody Johnson
There are two banner ads on The New York Jets website advertising Bret Favre Jets Jerseys. The New York Jets don’t want to waste anytime, and who can blame them? Bret Favre may change his mind at any moment and re-retire.
It’s hard not to think of other great, and not so great, players that never seem to know when to quit. I understand Brett Favre’s feelings though, the desire to play until they have to pry the football from his cold dead hands. But I can’t help but think how odd Tony Dorestt looked in that Broncos uniform or Earl Campbell looked as a Saint, or Emmitt Smith as a Cardinal. Then there was the frail and fragile living legend Joe Montana, playing for the Chefs-those last few games were just scary to watch.
The fact that these great players did not go on to further greatness in their old age only makes it odder that Bret Favre wants to play for the New York Jets. I know that these days most NFL players are like Vinny Testaverde and will play for anyone that will let them. Bret Favre was one of those old school one team players-well, not any more. Still, Brett Favre is not Joe Montana, so maybe it will not be a total disaster. I’ve never been a huge Green Bay Packers fan, but I did like watching Brett Favre play. So I wish Brett Favre the best for his time at New York, and be sure to get your Brett Favre New York Jets Jersey-they might be a collector’s item someday.
And hey, it could be worse-Brett Favre could be playing for The Dallas Cowboys. Of course, the Dallas Cowboys are waiting for Michael Vick to get out of jail-he’s more their speed.
