Tying Glass Bead Flies
By Joe J Warren Softcover, 64 pages
ISBN 1-57188-107-7
A wonderful book for both the fly fisherman and beader alike! Joe Warren accidentally “discovered” glass beads while waiting for his wife in a local craft store. By experimenting with a variety of bead colors and sizes, he perfected tying glass bead flies for his fishing adventures.
Joe shows you the best hooks and beads to use, the most effective tools and accessories, different beads, and the techniques used for incorporating them into fly tying. Tons of tips and hundreds of fly patterns for both fresh and saltwater fishing are also included. Beads will now excite the entire family!
Maybe the idea of using art glass beads to make fishing lures seems a little odd. But fish like shiny things like hand blown glass beads. Who knows, maybe roman glass beads were used to catch the occasional fish, though I don’t think they had fly fishing trips back then. Christmas glass beads would make pretty flies, red and greens would work on the whole fly fishing front. Of course, just plain old beads would work as well.
Maybe you are thinking of selling your flies, in which case you would need a place to find wholesale beads. I’ve never been to just a bead store, but I have seen them at jewelry supply shops. You could think of adding some sterling silver beads as well as glass beads, you never know what will strike a trout’s fancy.
I think Swarovski crystal beads would be a bit over the top though, as well as Swarovski rhinestones. But maybe Austrian crystal and roman glass beads would look nice, for those fly fishing display type fishing lures. I’m not sure that if I made hand blown glass beads I would really want to feed them to a fish on a fly fishing vacation trip.
