The Soul of an Octopus

A lion named Cecile was killed by a lowlife dentist not too long ago. This was big news. Pro-Lion and Pro-Hunter formed groups. He was Evil! He was just thinning the Herd! It was a hot topic on the Morning Shows. The gang at CBS Morning News were all outraged that this great cat was killed. A bit later, they talked about a new restaurant. A fun place where you picked out the fish you wanted to eat from a live tank. The fish was then killed, cooked, and served right in front of the customers. The very same self…

The End of the Tour

The story of a stereotypical unstable author who says early on that he doesn’t want to be portrayed as a stereotypical unstable author. Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg do the bulk of the work here. We follow a writer for Rolling Stone magazine, Eisenberg, as he interviews a slightly manic author, Segal. The author is David Foster Wallace, who has just published his masterpiece [easyazon_link identifier=”B000YBHBKW” locale=”US” tag=”londonthoug-20″]Infinate Jest[/easyazon_link], and the writer is David Lipsky. Over the course of five days, we watch as Lipsky works out a complex bit of jealousy, envy, and hero worship as he interviews Wallace. The…

Brain on Fire:My Month of Madness

I grew up with a bit of madness around me. My older brother was bipolar, my older sister was also a bit nuts, but she was never officially diagnosed with anything. Over the years I’ve had plenty of moments when I felt a bit crazy myself. I’ve read a lot of books on the brain and it’s usually a scary bit of business. As one doctor put it, we are all one head injury away from being someone else. Susannah Cahalan is a reporter who discovers that she is slowly loosing her mind. At first she is able to notice…

Secondhand Souls

The further adventures of Asher and Co. Asher the dead Beta Male returns as a crocodile headed Squerril Person-who has a ten inch penis that he keeps wrapped around his waist as an erection causes him to faint. We also see Minty Fresh, The Emperor of San Fransico, and the rest of the gang from the other books in this series. If there are cameos from other books I didn’t notice them this time. Fisher Stevens returns to read the audio book and does the same brilliant job he’s done on the other Christopher Moore books he’s read. There are a…

10% Happier

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Dan Harris is a TV News Anchor who appears to have spent a good deal of time feeling sorry for himself. He’s kind of a smug fellow with a nice soothing voice. He does a good job of reading his book and delivering the gags and one liners that fill all the space between the Zen talk. But Dan isn’t happy about his super successful life…because he’s not Walter Cronkite or his personal idol, Peter Jennings. The fact that there are no Cronkites or Jennings in the modern world doesn’t seem…

The Shepherd’s Crown by Terry Pratchett

The last Discworld book by Terry Pratchett. Book Number 41 is about Tiffany Aching and the Discworld Witches. While we get a few flashes of the larger Discworld, Death, Hex, Vetinari, etc – this is mainly a tale of Witches and Elves and the Nac Mac Feegles. These have never been my favorite characters. I hate the Nac Mac Feegles. I would have preferred the last novel to be about Moist or Rincewind, but then, this was a pretty good book. The standard Sir Terry formula has been to find a downtrodden group, such as Golems or Trolls or Dwarves or Goblins and show that…

The Intern

My all time favorite Anne Hathaway movie is The Devil Wears Prada. The Intern is pretty much the Devil Wears Prada with Anne playing the role of the devil and Robert Deniro playing the role of the newbie personal assistant. Only without all that bothersome drama and conflict. It also reminded me of an odd little book I read a few years back called Starbucks Saved My Life about an old white guy who gets a low paying job and helps his boss and coworkers with his vast worldly experience. I love Robert and Anne. I like the music. I love…

The Muppets- well, sort of

Not you father’s Muppets-well, not MY muppets. I think the most cringe worthy moment in this first show filled to the gills with cringe worthy moments was when Kermit’s new pig Denise is shown bobbing her head while she sucks a straw.  ‘What can I say, I like pigs.’ says Kermit as he turns and watches Denise. At least the straw wasn’t green. Modeled on [easyazon_link identifier=”B00LTO342M” locale=”US” tag=”londonthoug-20″]The Office[/easyazon_link] or [easyazon_link identifier=”B0000E2PVR” locale=”US” tag=”londonthoug-20″]Curb Your Enthusiasm[/easyazon_link], The Muppets is filled with a lot of camera zooms and shaky movements. Our heroes are nothing but angst ridden muppets who bear…

TED Radio Hour

TED — Technology, Entertainment and Design TED has pretty much reached a point where it’s like YouTube, there is so much random crap that it’s hard to find something you really want to invest 18 minutes in. The good folks at the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00GKS2QB2″ locale=”US” tag=”londonthoug-20″]NPR[/easyazon_link] show, The TED Radio Hour, have taken the work out of sorting TED talks. They pick a topic and then drop in bits and pieces of TED talks and interviews with the people who gave the talk. For the most part these are thought provoking and fun. Most of the speakers are people I…

The Hollywood Reporter Top 100 TV Shows

Best TV Shows Ever? Eh. The Hollywood Report put out a list of Hollywood’s 100 Favorite TV Shows, based on the votes of industry insiders. They had a similar list last year of the Top 100 Movies. Best TV Shows Ever counts down from 100 and gives each entry a short bio and a couple of fun facts. They asked over 2,800 ‘industry people’ what their favorite TV series was. I would be hard pressed to name a favorite, since I tend to break them down by category. Is a great comedy better than a great drama? Is Sci Fi…
