Ashley Flores is a thirteen year old girl who is missing-or so the email went that ask everyone to forward it in a kind of online Amber Alert. Just one catch, she is not missing, it was joke played by a friend last year.
Urbanlegends.com found the story last year and discovered Ashley’s friend Vicki who began the email as a prank. Funny, eh?
Vicki told urbanlegends.com: “Ashley Flores is not missing. It was merely a joke that got completely out of hand. Please inform everyone that she is not missing. It was a joke. I’m sorry about any confusion.”
This email started in America, moved to Australia and has since been making it’s way around the world, most recently showing up in Dubai.
The reaction to this email ranges from how could they do that? to What are you people, dummies? The days of the simple Bart Simpson style phone prank are gone, so expect to see more and more emails like this. It’s easy enough to copy and paste a name into a search engine and find out if someone is really missing before sending it off to your friends.
But it is also easy to be fooled when we are constantly being bombard with missing people and unsolved crimes. When was the last time you seriously looked at a missing person’s photo? We all want to make the world a better place, I’m just not sure forwarding emails is the way to do it.
